Pierce

“I didn’t take you for the cooking type, Linc,” Shepherd said as they ate around the coffee table in the living room.

“Are you kidding?” Lincoln stuffed a spoonful of SpaghettiOs in his mouth and gulped. “You think this job is the only thing in my life?”

“Well, I know for a fact you’re not married, and you don’t have a girlfriend because who could stand to be with you for longer than two weeks?”

“Very fucking funny. But just because you’ve seen this side of me doesn’t mean I’m not a natural charmer.”

Shepherd directed her attention to Pierce. “Pierce, you’ve been out with him before, right? What’s he like around women?”

“I don’t know how he does it, but most of the time we go out, he leaves with someone,” Pierce said.

The truth was Lincoln lacked class, but he focused on quantity over quality. That meant that, in a bar where he approached ten chicks, at least one was bound to fall for his display of confidence. And he never missed the opportunity to mention he was in the special forces, which a lot of chicks loved, especially the younger ones that Lincoln always seemed to go after.

Unfortunately, once they saw through him and learned he was just a shallow player, they didn’t stay. Lincoln didn’t mind, though. Commitment was not one of the things he was after. Not that their job would even allow such a luxury.

Pierce himself had dated in the past—even had two serious relationships—but with the unpredictable requirements of his job, he could never settle down in one place or promise his partner when and if he’d be back.

Married to the job, that had become somewhat of a catchphrase among the guys in the unit.

There were a few exceptions, though. Like Murphy.

With the danger temporarily out of the way, Pierce’s adrenaline levels were at their lowest. That meant his mind was able to process everything that had transpired without having to focus on not getting killed.

It wasn’t until then that it hit Pierce: Murphy was dead. His wife was at home with his child, probably worried sick, anxiously checking her phone, dreading it ringing.

“Well, it’s easy charming the pants of a barely legally adult chick with daddy issues,” Shepherd said. “Try doing it to a woman your age.”

“You know what? That’s what I’m going to do. Pierce, you’re our witness,” Lincoln said. “The next time we go out, I’m going to hook up with a woman my age. In fact, she won’t just be my age. She’s going to be a successful, strong-willed, not-easily-persuaded woman.”

“In your dreams.”

Pierce smiled. They talked like they were already out of the city, safe and sound, the mission long behind them. It was a common occurrence among some units while waiting. Sitting around and thinking about what might happen next caused minds to snap. Keeping occupied with small talk about the outside world gave them a feeling of normalcy. It was pretense only, but if it helped get them through another day, then it was worth it.
